What Type of Skincare is Right For Me?

Everyone’s skin is different, just like everyone’s bodies are different. After all, the skin is considered an organ (and the biggest one, at that!) By now, we know the basics of how to take care of our skin; staying out of the sun, applying SPF, no smoking or picking zits, and more.) But do you know what skincare products are right for you?

Check out which ingredients and products are right for you based on your skin type below.

Oily Skin

If you have oily skin, your biggest battle is shine. Maybe even the feeling of being greasy as the day goes on. How do you combat it? Keeping your skincare as oil-free and dry as possible? Wrong! When you have oily skin, that’s a sign of your skin actually being dry and your skin begging for moisture. Alas, the over production of oils.

With having this type of skin, you want to use a toner, post-cleanse. Incorporate a toner with salicylic acid, glycolic acid or lactic acid to remove dirt and oils. And lastly, using a moisturizer is key. Whether you prefer a thick, luscious feel, or a light and simple finish, don’t skip out on hydrating your face (Still hesitant? You may even go with one that is “oil-free”).

Dry Skin

Much like oily skin, your face craves moisture when you have dry, flaky and/or itchy skin. Much of the time, your complexion will look dull and tired. It’s important to avoid harsh cleansers and over-cleansing. Though, you still want to cleanse, moisturize and protect. Using a facial serum can provide an extra element of hydration.

Essential ingredients for dry skin include squalene, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, shea butter and an assortment of oils, such as coconut oil, apricots oil, avocado oil, or olive oil. Seeking out moisturizing products and protecting your skin from drying and damaging SPF is vital.

Combination Skin

If you’ve been ever-so-blessed with combination skin, your challenge is to find neutral skincare products that teeter on the line of dry and oily skin remedies. Your “T-zone” is likely to develop oil fast, while other areas like your cheeks and possibly chin crave hydration.

Your skincare routine should reflect a combination of the above: cleanse, toner, hydration, and treat. Face masks are your friend in any circumstance, especially with combination skin, as they can address many skin needs. Ingredients you should seek after include lactic acid, ceramides, glycerin and Vitamin C.

Pro Tip: Don’t forget to bring your skincare down to your neck and décolleté to prevent wrinkles!

Sensitive, Textured & Acne-Prone Skin

Oftentimes with acne-prone skin, your skin is sensitive and reacts poorly to products and treatments. You may be weary to try new products, but knowing which ingredients are acne-combating and sensitive-skin friendly is crucial to a clear, glowing face.

Using an exfoliator clears your pores of dead skin cells, dirt and makeup. Of course, using a face wash with salicylic acid and antioxidants such as vitamin C and E will help limit acne. Niacinamide-inclusive products and clay masks are also pivotal in keeping your pores clean – just be sure you’re not over-using any of these products, leading you to dry and even more sensitive skin.

Pro Tip: Before using any new products, test a small amount on the back of your hand or arm to be sure it agrees with your skin.

Scarred, Hyper-Pigmented & Aged Skin

To prevent aged skin, meaning wrinkles, dullness and fine lines, wearing SPF is principal. If you already have aged or scarred skin, it is still vital to protect yourself. Using skincare with antioxidants, ferulic acid, retinoids and peptides can make your skin “bounce back” with vitality. This, in combination with desired skin treatments such as phototherapy, or Sciton® Laser Treatments, can decrease the appearance of sunspots, small vessels due to aging, loose skin.

Additionally, microneedling with PRP may also be an option for you. Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure where “micro” needles prick the face’s skin, generating new collagen-rich skin tissue. As a result, fine lines and uneven tone are reduced, smoothing, firming, and tightening the skin. Additionally, dark spots, scars, acne and acne scars, and large pores may also be eliminated.
