The Benefits of Chemical Peels

While the idea of chemical peels may bring a grueling image to your mind, the popular esthetic procedure is quite beneficial for your skin and luxurious – think elevated facial.

What are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels, or skin peels, are a cosmetic treatment that restores the look and feel of the skin using a chemical solution (such as ZO® Skin Health Stimulator Peel). In time, the solution peels away old, damaged cells, bringing forth new, healthy skin cells.

This service is done by a dermatologist or esthetician, due to there being three levels: light/superficial, medium, and deep. The differences are based on the strength of the peel, determined by the skin’s texture, tone, and overall “problem”/desired end result.

It is important to note that multiple treatments may be necessary to reach your skin goals.

What are the Benefits of Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels help with various skin issues, such as signs of aging, wrinkles, acne, uneven skin texture, dullness, and hyperpigmentation, also known as dark spots. It can even enhance overall skin health by promoting blood flow.

A deep chemical peel can remove precancerous growths or skin patches from heavy sun exposure (decreasing the risk of skin cancer). This type is performed by a dermatologist rather than an aesthetician, as it requires general anesthesia and is to be done in a surgical setting.

Of course, at Wellness Revolution, we do not perform deep chemical peels. Instead, we perform light to medium superficial peels for aesthetic purposes.

What to Expect Before, During & After a Chemical Peel

As you may assume, chemical peels are more invasive than a regular facial; it requires a healing process due to the physical shedding of skin.

Before: Before applying the peel, your skin is cleansed deeply. Talk to your esthetician to see whether at-home preparation is needed.

During: The chemical peel solution is applied evenly to your face. This process feels similar to a regular facial.

After: This is where you start seeing changes, along with results. Depending on the type of peel, healing time varies (light: 1 to 7 days, medium: 7 to 14 days). At this time, your skin may be red and scaling can occur. Naturally, your skin may be drier during this time; a lotion or ointment may be recommended.

Everyone is different. Talk to your provider for detailed and customized instructions about post-chemical peel care.

Chemical Peel Don'ts

  • Do not pick, scratch, or peel the skin at any time during the process. This can cause scarring, discoloration, and sensitivity.

  • Do not wear makeup immediately after the peel. Wait until your skin heals.

  • Do not spend excessive time in direct sunlight, especially without SPF. This includes tanning beds.

  • Do not try to perform chemical peels at home to avoid skin damage or negative reactions.
