What Type of BBL® Phototherapy is Right For Me?

As covered in a previous blog, BBL® phototherapy (BroadBand Light phototherapy) is an intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment that uses a broad spectrum of light to treat various skin conditions, such as sun damage, hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, and acne.

The process requires a handheld device that delivers short pulses of light to the skin (we use the Sciton mJOULE™ paired with BBL HERO). The light penetrates the skin and targets the melanin and blood vessels without affecting the surrounding tissue. This process stimulates the body's natural healing process, which can result in the reduction of pigmentation and the improvement of overall skin texture and tone.

In 2012, Stanford University completed a study (published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology) that found that “BBL treatment promotes the gene expression pattern of young skin.” Just after three treatments, arm skin showed improvements in aging, including wrinkling and pigmentation. Also present was an increase in epidermal thickness!

There are several different types of BBL phototherapy via various wavelength filters, each with its own specific uses and benefits.

Here are the filters/treatments we offer at Wellness Revolution:

  1. Forever Young BBL: This type targets the signs of aging, including wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots. The specific wavelength of light ultimately restores collagen and elastin production in the skin, producing a more youthful complexion.

  2. BBL HERO™ Body: More versatile than the rest in terms of body coverage, this type of BBL limits hyperpigmentation, such as freckles, age spots, and sunspots. It targets the melanin in the skin, causing it to break down and fade.

  3. Forever Clear BBL: Obvious in the name, this focus of BBL phototherapy treats acne and acne scars. By killing the bacteria that cause acne, this treatment reduces inflammation and promotes healthy skin cell growth.

  4. Forever Bare BBL: As you may have guessed, this type removes pesky, unwanted hair. It works by targeting the melanin in the hair follicles, heating them up and destroying them, resulting in a permanent reduction in growth.

The type of BBL phototherapy right for you depends on your personal needs and end goals.

While this non-invasive treatment typically requires no downtime, patients may experience mild redness or swelling for a few hours post-treatment. Multiple treatments may be required to achieve optimal results depending on the patient's aesthetic desires.
